If you check social media, the Ohio Bobcats (5-2, 3-0 MAC) have gained a measure of national celebrity recently for an accomplishment beginning November 15, 2023 in a 34-20 win against Central Michigan.

With Indiana's loss to Ohio State last week, the Bobcats now stand alone with the nation's longest home winning streak at 16 games. If you saw Ohio's defense of their home turf, "The Frank," earlier this year against Jacksonville State, you can see how the 'Cats will to win playing in front of their raucous crowd is very tough to beat. A bonus milestone if Ohio can win this week is that the 'Cats would join the winner of this week's Toledo vs Western Michigan game as the first bowl-eligible MAC squads of 2026.

For Eastern Michigan (4-4, 3-1 MAC), you don't use hashtags like "#ETOUGH" or play at a place called "The Factory" unless you are willing to roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty, and do whatever it takes to win. So when the Eagles land in Athens, expect them to give Ohio everything it has.

With three wins each in MAC play, both squads have earned early relevance in the race to Detroit for the MAC championship game and look to take another step toward that goal. A loss here would be severely detrimental for both of their efforts. This is what we know going into this one:

Ohio Bobcats outlook

Seven games into the season, the 'Cats look positioned to make a run to Detroit. Winners of four-straight, including a 48-7 win over an overmatched Sacramento State last week, the team has gelled significantly since the season opener and are making regular contributions in all phases.

Offensively, key players returned from injury the last few weeks helping to bring it all together, including starters like quarterback Nick Poulos and running back Duncan Brune. Since Poulos' return two weeks ago, the 'Cats have really mixed and executed their offense well, being multidimensional and threatening the whole field. For instance, during that span, the offense has registered at least 18 plays of at least 12 yards or more (rushing and passing combined). Expect to see the 'Cats try to duplicate that this week as the defensive look allows.

Ranking 23th nationally in rushing offense with 207 yards per game on average so far, expect to also see a heavy dose of running from Poulos, and running backs Duncan Brune (330 yards rushing, three touchdowns) and Victor Rosa. Also, figure Poulos to get some short and intermediate routes and redzone throws to leading receiver Riley Neer (32 catches, 441 yards, five touchdowns). Mixing it up, if the situation warrants, Poulos may use his strong arm to chuck bombs to wideouts like Dom Dorwart and Preston Bowman. The tight end group has not caught a ton of passes but have made some crucial plays in run-pass options on key downs or in the redzone.

One important note of frustration for opponents is how the Bobcats are sustaining drives this year, ranking 15th nationally in third-down conversions and 23rd on fourth-down.

Leading the offensive operation overall is a line that replaced all of its starters but has paved the way, featuring some young players in sophomores center Bryce Parsons and right guard Seth Anstead.

Through the first three games (Kent State, Central Michigan, and Sacramento State), Ohio is allowing only 10.3 points per game on average. Of those points, a significant number have been scored late in the game against backups.

Some other broad brushstrokes where the 'Cats have stood out is ranking first in the MAC in tackles-for-loss, second in redzone defense, and fourth in total defense at 337 yards per game allowed.

Having faced a multitude and variety of good rushing attacks so far this year, Ohio has had a lot of experience in fitting the run and should be prepared to make a strong go of that this week.

Individually, Ohio features a deep rotation on the defensive line anchored by players like defensive end Ike Ackerman, who leads the club with 4.5 sacks.

The Bobcats boast one of the better linebacker groups in the conference led by Michael Molnar, who leads the club with 52 stops while adding four sacks, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Due to score or injuries, the Bobcats have shown so promising depth in the group in players like Jermaine Minnis, who had 12 stops in his starting debut a few weeks back against Central Michigan.

As we discuss later when we preview EMU, the Eagles passing game could be the best Ohio has faced so far overall in MAC play. Countering the Eagles in the air, Ohio features a surging defensive backfield unit, with corners Kendall Bannister and Barry Dillion and safeties DJ Walker and Darren James-Hamilton all making plays. Last week, Dillion had his first career interception, while Bannister and James-Hamilton lead the club with five and four passes defensed respectively.

Finally, special teams continue to make an impact on the outcome. For instance, kicker Will Hryszko has been a plus so far, handling kickoffs and field goals, making 75 percent of his tries on the year.

Eastern Michigan outlook

Eastern Michigan heads into this one having played an extra conference game thanks to a Week 0 win over Sacramento State, boasting a strong record at the midway point of the MAC season at 3-1. Last week, though, the Eagles ran into a buzzsaw in a talented Toledo Rocket looking to reestablish itself after a loss to Buffalo the week prior. In the blink of an eye, the first two quarters got away from EMU quickly, with Toledo scoring 31 first half points. The Eagles bounced back in the second half but the hole was too deep to climb out.

Flushing last week, the contending Eagles look to their opportunity in Athens, Ohio.

Normally, the offense is led by their excellent quarterback Noah Kim– but there has been concern he may not be able to play. Behind Kim on the depth chart at quarterback are Brogan McCaughey and Jace Stuckey, both who made their Eagle debuts last week versus Toledo. McCaughey also made a few starts for Yale in 2024.

Under Kim, EMU has made a lot of hay in the passing game where they have passed for 215 yards a game on average. Kim is among the leaders in the MAC in passing stats, ranking second in both passing yards and passing touchdowns with 1,678 and 11 respectively. Although the sack-adjusted rushing years paint a different picture, Kim has very good athletic ability and can run or improvise as the situation warrants.

Despite the injuries in the wideout room this year including star Nick Devereaux, when Kim goes to the air the signal caller has multiple talented options beginning with tight end Joshua Long. The EMU playmaker is tough to defend with the size, athleticism, and drive to excel. The future Sunday player leads the club with 38 catches for 366 yards. Joining Long is a pair of wideouts with over 300 yards receiving each in Benson Prosper and Harold Mack, with Mack leading the club with four touchdowns.

When they go to the ground, the Eagles feature a pair of big, strong backs with Amareon Blue and Braydon Bennett. Blue leads statistically with 338 yards, for 5.0 average per carry, and three scores.

Defensively, in MAC games so far this year, some statistics stand out. Given Ohio leads the league in rushing yards a game so far this year, the Eagles counter with a run defense that has been very solid this year, ranking fourth in the MAC in rushing yards allowed. Eastern Michigan has also been opportunistic and explosive in MAC play so far, ranking second in interceptions and forced fumbles while also fourth in redzone defense.

The unit features playmakers at all levels of the defense. The defensive line figures to be one of the better in the league, with sophomore lineman Quincy Byas leading the way with four sacks. WILL linebacker Zach Mowchan is putting together a fine season, leading the club with 58 tackles and three passes defensed. Defensive back and team captain Bryce Llewellyn continues to anchor the secondary. Llewellyn has a lot of experience, appearing in 24 games for the Eagles, recording career number such as 153 tackles 7.5 tackles-for-loss, 11 passes defensed, and two interceptions and forced fumbles.

Like Ohio, EMU has some special teams standouts like kicker Rudy Kessinger, who has nailed about 75 percent of his career field goal attempts.

Game outlook

This game will be a major test for each team. No one is walking away a winner without playing well.

On paper, though, Ohio probably has the edge given things like the injury situation, with injuries mounting for the Eagles while Ohio has had some key returnees from the medical tent in the past few weeks.

Eastern will come in with a good plan prepared to battle for 60 minutes, no doubt as they always do under head coach Chris Creighton. To win, EMU will need to make more hay in all the areas they have in MAC play so far, like creating turnovers and solid run and redzone defense.

Ohio's offense has been explosive the past few weeks since quarterback Nick Poulos' return. If Ohio can establish the run and mix in the pass like they have recently, they will be tough to beat.
