Former BGSU pitcher Orel Hershiser to get star at Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Falcons great made his professional name as a rotation piece with the Los Angeles Dodgers before settling into broadcasting.
Orel Hershiser, who won World Series MVP in 1988 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, is set to be immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Before being drafted by the Dodgers in the 17th round of the 1979 MLB Draft, Hershiser spent three years at Bowling Green, making the roster his junior season after failing on his first two attempts. Hershiser would go on to dominate in his lone full campaign, earning all-conference honors after finishing 1979 with a 6-2 record and a 2.26 ERA, including a no-hitter in against Kent State.
Hershiser made his professional name by cementing himself as a key rotation piece for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1980s, posting one of the most dominant individual seasons ever seen in the sport in 1988, earning an All-Star Game appearance, the NL Cy Young Award, a Golden Glove and LCS MVP en route to a World Series win– where he also won MVP honors.
(To this day, Hershiser is the only player to ever achieve all those awards in one season.)
Hershiser, who was the first pitcher to earn LCS MVP honors in both leagues, also holds the present-day record for consecutive scoreless innings (59) and has ingratiated himself to fans as a broadcaster over two decades.
The star placement ceremony, put on by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, is set for Thursday, August 13th, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time, and will have Bob Costas serving as emcee. Clayton Kershaw, Joe Davis, Dave Roberts and Jaime Jarrin are all expected to be guest speakers.
