Kent Staten is a quarterback at Maple Heights High School, located under 15 miles southeast of Cleveland.

The Ohio native has one more year of high school eligibility remaining and will graduate in the class of 2027. However, he already committed to his college of choice. Living in the greater Cleveland area with eyes set on starring in the Mid-American Conference, it's only natural Kent Staten committed to...

Toledo.

Yes, the quarterback with an entire MAC school in his name will play for a different MAC program in the same state. Staten additionally held offers from Memphis (July 2024), Miami (OH) (November 2025), Bowling Green (May 2026), Western Michigan (May 2026), Akron (May 2026), and of course, Kent State (May 2026). Toledo was his latest offer, and he is the 12th recruit to sign to Toledo's 2027 class.

Staten verbally commited to a Toledo program which is typically the model of stability in the MAC, but the Rockets are undergoing drastic changes at the moment. In December, head coach Jason Candle departed for UConn after 10 seasons at the helm, leaving former Mercer head coach Mike Jacobs to be the program's next frontman.

After losing Tucker Gleason to graduation and Kalieb Osborne to UConn, Toledo is expected to start fifth-year junior John Alan Richter at quarterback this year. Staten will join the roster in the following season, hoping to become the Rockets' QB of the future.

Staten will conclude his high school career at Maple Heights this fall. The 6'1", 175 pound athlete previously played at Bedford High School in the greater Cleveland area, playing a variety of positions. As a junior, he played quarterback, wide receiver, safety, kick returner, and punt returner, accruing over 200 passing yards, 600 rushing yards, 200 receiving yards, eight offensive touchdowns, 20 tackles, six pass breakups, four interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.
