2026 MAC Football Week 3 Game Preview: Ohio Bobcats at South Alabama Jaguars

For the second time in as many weeks, Ohio (1-1) finds itself in a serious scrap against a worthy opponent who has faced the fire in its own right recently.

Last week, the Bobcats clawed their way back from the brink of defeat in a 4OT thriller to will itself to their 14th straight home win, 29-27. Meanwhile, the Jaguars (1-1) faced a formidable Tulane Green Wave squad last week on the road in a back-and-forth struggle where South Alabama came up just short in the final minutes, 28-24.

This week the task is to rest and refit after emotional/physical games and turn laser focus on the task at hand.

Based upon the action last week, we have plenty to share about the state of affairs for each club heading into this one.

South Alabama outlook

South Alabama heads into the 2026 season like a lot of clubs, trying to gel a squad from a core of returning players and a good bit of portal transition.

In the season opener, the Jaguars won as expected against FCS Southeast Louisiana State Lions, 39-14. Standing out for South Alabama's defense that day was a 2-0 turnover edge, 2.6 yards per rushing attempt allowed, and holding the Lions to 0-of-7 on third downs. Offensively, USA worked a lot on the running game, with workman-like results, 59 carries for 241 yards, a 4.1 yards per carry average.

The Jaguars faced a significant upgrade in opponent in Week 2, with some important positive early trends. First, USA did not turn the ball over for the second straight week and committed to the run with 40 attempts, at 4.6 yards per carry.

In summary, offensively so far on the young season, the team has committed to possessing the ball, leading the nation in time of possession with almost 39 minutes per contest while running the ball about 63 percent of the time.

Looking at the offensive players, QB Bishop Davenport got his first college start against Ohio in 2024, a 27-20 loss. Since then, Davenport has matured with multiple starts in 2025. In 2026, the Jags' signal caller is the straw that stirs the drink, accounting for the majority of offensive rushing and passing combined this year. Davenport passed for a career-best 296 yards last week, but his bread-and-butter to this point is rooted in South Alabama's running game, where Davenport is a redzone rushing threat with nine ground scores last year. QB1 can frustrate teams too with improvised runs to move the chains on third down. Also, after two option red zone scores against Ohio last week, we'll find out if Davenport will get the call this week in that area if it is in the Jags playbook.

Keen so far in working the run game, some names to know in the running game are a tandem of productive backs, who are first-year starters for the home team. The squad is lead by four-year player PJ Martin, who has 641 career rushing yards for the Jags and six rushing touchdowns. Keenan Phillips also got his shot last week and pitched in 41 yards.

On the outside, Davenport has some slick targets beginning with Brendan Jenkins, a Samford Bulldog transfer last year who 89 catches for almost 900 yards before transferring. Jenkins had nine catches last week in his most productive effort for the Jags and is a guy to watch. Don't sleep on other wideouts like Anthony Eager, who had an explosive in single coverage last week for a 43-yard score.

The defense features a lot of new starters and trying to improve on allowing explosive plays, something which often plagues new-look defensive units. The Jags played a lot of sound defense last week under new and experienced coordinator Todd Orlando against a solid opponent, but runs of 80 and 54 yards and passes of 61, 36, and 19 yards were killers in a four-point loss.

Ohio outlook

Where does the season so far leave the Bobcats heading into this game in terms of personnel? It's not entirely clear.

Last week against Jax State, Ohio showed its signature toughness and physicality and a will to win that game despite the great play of Jax State and injury adversity.

In the process of defeating the Gamecocks though, the 'Cats offense alone lost QB1, QB2, and RB1 Duncan Brune to injuries and they did not return. Meanwhile, the Bobcats have shuffled the deck on the offensive line with regularity so far, trying to find the right combination with some off-season injuries playing a part in forming the starting lineup.

Unsurprisingly, head coach John Hauser did not share injury status during his weekly press conference, except that most or all injured would return at some point this season.

Who will start at QB is anyone's guess outside of the Bobcat's locker room. QB1 Nick Poulos left last week after being knocked out with a hit to the head on a targeting penalty. QB2 Matt Vezza piloted the squad to second half scores with a scrappy performance, but left after an undisclosed injury late in the fourth quarter. True freshman and QB3 Levi Davis in his first game action as a Bobcat showed a lot of poise and confidence in leading the Bobcats to victory, ultimately scoring the game-winner on a run up the middle in the fourth overtime.

Pulling out the dart board, RB Victor Rosa could get the start this week for an injured Brune. Rosa brings in a wealth of experience with almost 1,500 career yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Also, Ohio typically uses two backs, so if Brune can't go, expect to see one or more of the up-and-comers get a shot, including Michael Taylor Jr. or Irving Brown.

The receiving corps entering the season remains intact led by slot receiver Riley Neer, who has 10 catches for 142 yards and two scores.

The offensive line that finished the game could be what we see to start the contest this week. The offensive line were a factor in the win over Jax State, for instance leading two second half drives for ten points which combined for 31 plays, 155 yards, while consuming almost 17 minutes of game clock.

On a final offensive note, offensive coordinator Scott Isphording, on the John Hauser Show this week, indicated they would like to focus on creating more explosive plays moving forward. So far, the 'Cats have two plays over 20 yards, both in the passing game.

The Bobcat defense will look to continue to improve heading into conference play. Last week, Jax State's offense was formidable in mixing things up horizontally around the line of scrimmage in the run and pass game, running the quarterback, and sprinkling in some deep shots while the Bobcats were focused on action around the line of scrimmage. The Bobcats will probably see a similar formula this week against QB Davenport and company.

The unit as a whole leading the charge so far is the linebacker group, with captain Jack Fries and Michael Molnar combined for 24 stops last week with Molnar adding two tackles-for-loss.

The back end of the defense is similar to the offensive line in that they continue to rotate in players due to injury or otherwise to solidify their group. The status of safety DJ Walker is unknown after leaving last week late in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury. Walker's return this week would be a Bobcat boon, as the Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native is the leader of the secondary. Walker's spirited play in the first half last week showed why he is highly-regarded, making or assisting in several key stops to slow Jax State.

As for other DBs on the radar this week, nickel Ronald Jackson Jr. started last week due to an injury to Eli Thompson in week one, showing some physicality and toughness. Transferring in for 2026 from Elon (FCS), Safety Darren James-Hamilton has been an immediate contributor, not only helping patrol the back end but returning a 98-yard kickoff return for score last week.

In addition to James-Hamilton's touchdown last week, special teams have made some valuable contributions so far this year with some things to work on. Magnus Haines and company had three punts inside the 20-yard line helped with field position and slowing the Jax State offensive juggernaut. New kicker Will Hryszko showed some range draining 40+ yard attempts in week one versus Nebraska but Ohio continues to work on field goal this week as the Gamecocks blocked two attempts.

Game outlook

For the second week in a row, the Bobcats face a similarly-talented crew, both with the same basic strategy: dominate the sticks on offense, run the ball while controlling the clock, and mixing in some explosive plays.

For Ohio, the contest will challenge the visitor's depth, with backups asked to shoulder some of the load. If it goes like last week though, the next man should play well enough to give Ohio a chance on the road.

With South Alabama, its continuing to control the clock and reducing explosive plays on defense.
