Traveling about 2,103 miles as the crow flies, the Ohio Bobcats (5-2, 3-0 MAC) dispatched the Sacramento State Hornets (1-5, 0-3 MAC) in the first ever meeting– moving to 2-0 on the road in MAC play in the process.

Winners of four straight, the 'Cats came out strong on both sides of the ball, scoring on their first six offensive drives (not including end of half drive) while defensively stymieing the home team on its first seven drives, forcing six punts and an interception.

The affair was a homecoming of sorts for Ohio quarterback Nick Poulos, who hails from Granite Bay, not far from Sacramento. Poulos and company put on a show overall, mixing the offense with run and pass, inside and out, attacking the whole field while getting many skill players involved. On the day for Ohio, nine players had at least one rush while eight had at least one catch, and four quarterbacks saw action.

Ohio's offensive line paved the way 265 yards rushing, 6.3 yards an attempt, and five touchdowns, while allowing zero sacks on 22 passing attempts for over 200 yards.

Running backs Duncan Brune and Victor Rosa did damage early, with the duop totaling three touchdowns on the ground. Wideout Riley Neer was a key part of the first half success, finishing with five catches for 44 yards.

Sacramento State came into the contest injury-riddled, and did not help themseles with self-inflicted wounds in the form of 12 penalties for 130 yards. A lack of execution and the pure talent gap ultimatley sealed their fate against a sound Ohio defense.

The first few drives, key Hornets offensive players made some hay like on passes from quarterback Jackson Sharman to wideout Matt Coleman and a few productive runs by freshman running back Isaiah Ene, but the drives eventually stalled. Over the course of the game, Ohio's defense squeezed Sharman and the offense for three sacks, six tackles-for-loss, six passes defensed and an interception– with Sharman eventually leaving due to injury.

Up 27-0 at halftime, Ohio quickly added another touchdown to open the third quarter on a 67-yard pass from Poulos to Preston Bowman. The speedy Bobcat wideout took the short pass and outraced the defense down the sidelines for six.

At that point, teams began emptying the benches and reserves got some important reps.

Subbing for Sharman, third-team quarterback Brian Salazar Jr. connected with wideout Kenyon Shabazz on a 38-yard strike down the sideline for Hornets' score and the first career touchdown for both players as Hornets.

The Bobcats' second half also saw some individual milestones, with running back "Swervin'" Irving Brown recording his first career Ohio rushing touchdown, piling up 87 yards rushing in the process. Wideout and special teams contributor Blake Guffey recorded his first reception, while fellow wideout Delaney Crawford made his first too. Finally, freshman corner Bobby Miller had his first tackle-for-loss on a strong fourth-and-short tackle.

The Bobcats head home to Athens, Ohio to defend The Frank against Eastern Michigan in a game set for kickoff on Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern, while the Hornets, looking for their first FBS win of the 2026 campaign, fly to Ball State to take on Ball State for a Saturday contest scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. Eastern kick.
