2026 MAC Football Week 7 Game Preview: Toledo Rockets at Eastern Michigan Eagles
Only one of these team is undefeated in MAC play. It's Eastern Michigan, which gets homefield advantage. But Toledo is a touchdown favorite.
Setting the scene
Only one team enters Week 7 with a 3-0 record in MAC play. It's Eastern Michigan.
The Eagles have enjoyed a resurgent season under Chris Creighton, and their MAC Championship Game odds can skyrocket if they defend The Factory against Toledo on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Rockets were rolling, but their four-game win streak was snapped last Saturday against Buffalo. This week provides Mike Jacobs and Co. an opportunity to regroup on the road and reestablish themselves as MAC contenders.

Toledo Rockets outlook
Toledo (4-2, 1-1 MAC) finally watched its nine-game home win streak snap last week. Now, the Rockets take to the road at The Factory. They haven't had as much success away from home, faring 3-7 in their last 10 games outside the Glass Bowl, only scoring more than 23 points once during that stretch.
Sparking the offense will be essential Saturday. The Rockets averaged 42.4 points per game across their first five outings but were limited to one touchdown in the final five minutes against Buffalo.
Toledo is ready to prove last week was a fluke. Quarterback John Alan Richter is still enjoying a spectacular season as the MAC's leading passer, delivering 13 touchdowns to one interception. Last week was a rare outing where the Rockets weren't explosive through the air. But usually, Toledo can inflict damage with a bevy of different receivers downfield. Adjatay Dabbs, Rico Bond, and Bryson Hammer have all produced 100-yard games this year, while Terrell Crosby Jr. and tight end Sam Lee also serve as essential targets on offense. Dabbs is the leader of the group, boasting team-highs in receptions (27), receiving yards (402), and touchdowns (4).
The Rockets can be multidimensional on offense. In their last road game at Ball State, they produced two 100-yard running backs as CJ Miller exploded for 196 yards, while Connor Walendzak added 103. The explosiveness extends to the run game, and Toledo currently ranks fourth in the FBS in 50+ yard gains, only trailing Louisville, Memphis, and Texas State.
One other factor to watch when Toledo possesses the ball is pass protection. The Rockets are 4-0 when Richter doesn't take a sack and 0-2 otherwise.
Toledo's defense was among the nation's elite last season. This year, the Rockets are still capable on that side of the ball, they've fallen from second to 47th in total defense and fourth to 83rd in scoring defense.
The defense's primary issue hasn't been recording stops. It's been penalties. The Rockets were flagged 15 times for 137 yards last week and currently rank 110th in fewest penalty yards per game.
Toledo respectably stifled Buffalo's passing game last week, limiting the Bulls to 14-of-31 efficiency. Defensive end Andrew Zock has been as good as advertised as the lead pass rusher. The reigning FCS Defensive Player of the Year has stuffed the stat sheet with 5.o sacks, 8.0 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. Another future All-MAC standout is inside linebacker Isaac Zay, who is equally effective in stopping the run and in coverage. Zay has 45 tackles, four pass breakups, and two interceptions as one of the top holdovers on a team laden with transfers.
The Rockets will need to crank up the turnover production. They've intercepted just three passes this year, and all three were courtesy of the linebackers. Strong safety Armorion Smith will be patrolling the back end, looking to add an interception to his team-high 51 tackles and four pass deflections.
Eastern Michigan Eagles outlook
Eastern Michigan (4-3, 3-0 MAC) will be the first FBS team to play eight games this season. The Eagles haven't had a bye since their Week 0 conference opener against Sacramento State. While non-conference play was a struggle, Chris Creighton's team has stepped up against its MAC peers.
The Eagles handled Sac State, dominated UMass on the road, and escaped Akron with a late game-winning field goal to position themselves as dark-horse MAC contenders.
One reason why Eastern Michigan believes it can contend — its experience advantage. The Eagles enjoy more continuity than most of the MAC, and that starts at quarterback. Seventh-year senior Noah Kim led the conference in passing last seasons and currently ranks second behind Toledo's John Alan Richter. During Eastern Michigan's three-game win streak, Kim has exceeded 200 yards each game with five total touchdowns compared to just one interception.
The Eagles won three-straight without their top receiver Nick Devereaux, but the position has demonstrated its depth in his absence. Benson Prosper and Harold Mack have repeatedly risen to the occasion, with Prosper tallying 28 receptions for 301 yards and Mack adding 27 catches for 300 yards. Additionally, Eastern Michigan has heavily involved All-MAC tight end Joshua Long, whose 114 receiving yards were instrumental in staging the road win at Akron last week.
Eastern Michigan balances its run game between three backs — Amareon Blue, Braydon Bennett, and Joey Mattord. All three have between 53 and 61 carries on the year with similar production. Recently the offense has featured a heavier dose of Bennett and Mattord, while Blue has battled through injury. He was listed as questionable last week before handling one carry against Akron.
The Eagles already matched their win totals — both overall and in MAC play — largely due to an improved defense. Eastern Michigan fielded the worst run defense in the FBS last season, but the unit has progressed to 56th this year, allowing 135 yards per game. The passing defense still needs more work, but the unit has been sharp in MAC play, holding all three opponents below 24 points.
Most of the standouts are incumbent players in the midst of breakout seasons. Quincy Byas has shined on the defensive line, ranking atop the team with 4.0 sacks. Caleb Dobbs is thriving at cornerback, and he currently leads the FBS with seven pass breakups, in addition to securing a team-high two interceptions. Middle linebacker Zach Mowchan and strong safety Bryce Llewellyn have been the most forceful hitters in the bunch, checking in at first and second in tackles with 51 and 32, respectively.
Prediction
Eastern Michigan is playing its best football right now and receives homefield advantage against a Toledo team coming off a rough week. The Buffalo game was certainly uncharacteristic for a Rocket offense which has repeatedly showcased its explosiveness. Toledo is balanced and possesses some of the best skill position talent in the MAC, and the team's speed can be difficult to defend.
The Rockets' defense sets the tone in this one by limiting Eastern Michigan's run game, and John Alan Richter and the offense rebound to get back on track in Ypsilanti.
Prediction: Toledo 31, Eastern Michigan 17
