Ohio outlook

The Bobcats flat-out dominated Central Michigan during their homecoming weekend, scoring 31 unanswered points in the first half. They’ll have all the momentum as they aim for a 3-0 start to conference play.

It’ll be a homecoming for more than just Sac State this week, as Ohio starting quarterback Nick Poulos will return to his native Sacramento following his return to the lineup last week after a month away due to a head injury.

Poulos threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns, continuing an interception-free season in which he’s also been a threat on the ground. The six-foot-five gunslinger played his high school football at Granite Bay High School, a program with several alumni on Sac State’s roster.

While Poulos has provided a spark through the air, Ohio’s offensive identity is built around its ground game. The Bobcats average 197.3 rushing yards per contest, leaning on a committee of backs to move the chains and control possession.

Fifth-year senior running back Victor Rosa leads the team with 289 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while junior Duncan Brune– also back from an injury– has added 275 yards on 61 carries. Poulos provides another dimension with his legs, rushing for 133 yards and a touchdown in just three appearances.

That balanced rushing attack presents a difficult matchup for a Sac State defense that was gashed for 218 yards on the ground against Bowling Green, a team that entered the contest averaging just 84.8 rushing yards per game.

Ohio demonstrated its ability to dominate the line of scrimmage against Central Michigan, rushing for 245 yards on 50 attempts while controlling possession for nearly 34 minutes. The Bobcats converted nine of their 14 third-down opportunities, consistently extending drives and keeping the Chippewas’ offense off the field.

While Ohio relies heavily on its rushing attack, junior wide receiver Riley Neer has emerged as the Bobcats’ most dangerous receiving threat. Neer leads the team with 397 receiving yards and five touchdowns, giving Poulos a reliable downfield option if opposing defenses sell out to stop the run.

With Sac State struggling to contain opposing offenses, Ohio has an opportunity to dictate the pace of the game and put the Hornets in another early hole.

Sacramento State Outlook

The Hornets are in desperate need of a win, having dropped five-straight games following their victory over FCS Mississippi Valley State. Their latest loss, a 38-10 drubbing at the hands of Bowling Green, continued a troubling trend of offensive inconsistency and defensive collapses.

Sac State actually opened the scoring against the Falcons, capitalizing on an early interception to take a 3-0 lead. That advantage quickly evaporated, as Bowling Green scored 38 unanswered points before the Hornets finally found the end zone late in the fourth quarter.

Offensively, Sac State struggled to establish any rhythm, managing just 215 total yards and converting three of its 14 third-down attempts. Junior quarterback Jackson Sharman completed 13 of his 28 passes for 145 yards, while the Hornets managed just 70 yards on the ground.

The lack of a consistent rushing attack has been particularly concerning. Sac State averaged 3.9 yards per carry in the opening quarter against Bowling Green, but largely abandoned the ground game before halftime. Freshman running back Isaiah Ene provided a spark in the second half, but by then the Hornets were already facing a sizable deficit.

As mentioned above, Sac State allowed 218 rushing yards by a Bowling Green offense that entered the contest averaging just 84.8 yards per game on the ground. Missed tackles and poor positioning allowed the Falcons to repeatedly turn modest gains into explosive plays, an issue that could prove particularly costly against an Ohio team averaging nearly 200 rushing yards per contest.

Penalties have only compounded the Hornets’ struggles. Sac State committed seven penalties for 85 yards against Bowling Green, including five for 68 yards in the second quarter alone. Several extended Falcons possessions, contributing to a 17-point second quarter that effectively put the game out of reach.

For Sac State, the path to an upset starts with cleaning up those self-inflicted mistakes and finding a way to sustain drives. Against an Ohio team that has demonstrated its ability to control possession and dominate on the ground, another slow offensive performance could quickly turn into another lopsided defeat.

Prediction

It’s tough to envision a win here for the hapless Hornets, who stare down an Ohio team with their sights fully set on a conference title. You can imagine that there’s some extra motivation to win for the man at the helm, Poulos, who returns home to play in familiar territory. If Sac State were to pull a stunning upset, it’d be on the back of a major bounce back from the running game.

Prediction: Ohio 38, Sac State 17
