Yet another high-variance weekend of baseball MACtion has passed, and for a second weekend in a row, the conference’s top tier held firm.

As we’ve come to expect in this league, there were offensive explosions aplenty, keeping the standing tightly packed.

Kent State and Miami continue to look like the teams to beat, especially after the RedHawks stunned Big Ten foe Michigan in front of a record crowd. Northern Illinois stayed hot, and isn’t going anywhere, while Toledo jumped in the standings and Akron’s offense erupted in a way that could make them a spoiler down the stretch.

With May looming, the margin for error for the MAC’s elite is only shrinking.

Series Standouts

Kent State took two of three on the road at Western Michigan, surviving one of the wildest games of the season in the series opening 13-inning, 8-7 win. Senior catcher Brody Williams delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in the opener and added a home run in the finale.

Senior infielder Ripken Reese was the engine all weekend, driving in four runs in the opener before stacking multiple extra-base hits in the second game. Saturday’s 9-1 win was far more comfortable, with the Golden Flashes stringing together quality at-bats and getting a dominant start from senior pitcher Ciaran Caughey, who tossed six innings of shutout ball. Western Michigan was able to salvage something from the series, winning the finale by capitalizing on Kent State’s fielding miscues, staying in the conference’s top five.

Miami had had the loudest week in the conference. The RedHawks opened by slugging past Michigan in a 12-10 midweek shootout, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back home runs from sophomore catcher Carson Raether, sophomore infielder Christopher Roa and freshman infielder Diego Cruz. They’d carry that momentum into a dominant sweep of Central Michigan.

Senior infielder Evan Appelwick broke the program’s all-time RBI record in Friday’s win, while junior outfielder Marcus Dierks turned in a perfect 5-for-5 performance. Redshirt junior outfielder Tommy Harrison continued his steady production with another home run, the twelfth of the season for the towering lefty. The pitching staff delivered across the board, with senior pitchers Zac Sohosky and Carson Byers turning in elite performances. Byers fanned eight in six innings while Sohosky struck out seven across seven innings.

Northern Illinois secured its sixth-straight series win, taking two of three from Eastern Michigan behind a relentless offensive attack. Senior infielder Caden Robertson powered Friday’s win with five RBIs, while junior infielder Vinny Spotofora followed with a career-high five RBIs of his own on Saturday, including a late home run that put the game out of reach. Freshman outfielder Wyatt Wawro continued to set the tone at the top of the lineup, reaching base consistently and creating scoring opportunities. The Huskies couldn’t complete the sweep on Sunday, but their ability to generate runs in bunches remains one of the most reliable traits in the conference.

Toledo delivered one of the weekend’s more significant series wins, taking two of three from Bowling Green in the Battle of I-75. After dropping the opener, the Rockets responded behind a dominant outing from freshman pitcher Hayden Frey, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth and finished with eight innings of one-hit baseball.

Sunday’s comeback win may have been even more important. Toledo erased a four-run first-inning deficit behind a four-hit performance from freshman freshman outfielder Liam Arsich, who delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the ninth. Redshirt junior infielder Troy Sudbrook continued his standout season, extending his extra-base hit totals and providing consistent production throughout the lineup.

Akron completed the weekend’s second sweep in emphatic fashion, overwhelming Ohio with a barrage of offense. The Zips scored 21 runs in Friday’s opener and followed it up with 17-hit performances on consecutive days. Redshirt junior outfielder Prince DeBoskie, freshman utilityman Brady Bowen, redshirt sophomore outfielder Brody Chrisman and graduate student infielder Easton Amundson all turned in standout series, with multiple players driving in four or more runs across the weekend. Sunday’s win was the most impressive, as Akron erased an 8-3 deficit with a six-run eighth inning to secure the sweep.

UMass continued its strong stretch, taking two of three from Ball State. The Minutemen leaned on timely hitting from redshirt sophomore infielder Anthony Tirado and sophomore utilityman Gavin O’Brien, while sophomore infielder Reece McCarthy added power throughout the series. Sunday’s 8-6 win secured their third straight series victory, reinforcing their status as a dangerous lower-half team capable of disrupting the standings.

Standings outlook:

School MAC Record Overall Record Streak
Kent State 17-7 31-11 L1
Miami 17-7 29-13 W4
Northern Illinois 16-8 25-13 L1
Western Michigan 15-9 21-18 W1
Toledo 15-9 21-24 W3
Ball State 14-10 21-23 L1
Akron 10-14 19-25 L1
UMass 10-14 14-22 W1
Central Michigan 9-15 18-23 L3
Bowling Green 9-15 16-26 L2
Eastern Michigan 7-17 13-28 L1
Ohio 5-19 8-34 L4

Kent State and Miami remain at the top of the conference, with Northern Illinois close behind and Toledo gaining ground after its rivalry series win. The separation across the top tier remains minimal, with just a handful of games dividing first from the middle of the pack.

Akron’s sweep and UMass’ continued momentum add further pressure to a congested race, and both teams sit just four games behind sixth-place Ball State. With just six teams advancing, the Zips and the Minutemen will need major results down the stretch.

A look ahead:

Next weekend presents another set of high-leverage matchups with real implications for both the top and the middle of the standings. Toledo’s series against Ball State could shuffle positioning in the crowded middle tier, while Miami will look to sustain its offensive surge against Western Michigan.

Kent State faces the challenge of maintaining consistency against a red-hot Akron, while Northern Illinois will aim to extend its series-winning streak against a reeling Chippewa squad.

This season’s regular season MAC champion will likely be decided on the final week of the season, with little separation with just three weekends to go.
