#MACBats Digest: Four teams clinch a spot in Avon
As the postseason looms, a clear top tier separates thanks to explosive bats and statement sweeps.
With just a few weekends remaining in the Mid-American Conference title chase, the conference’s top dogs didn’t blink, with four teams securing their place at the MAC Baseball Championship in Avon, Ohio over the last week of games.
This weekend, we saw high-octane offense across the conference, with the winning teams averaging over 24 runs per series and over eight runs per game. After the dust settled, little ground was lost or gained in the standings, but a clear upper class has emerged.
Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, and Toledo have separated themselves at the top, each locking up a MAC Tournament berth this weekend. Toledo, previously in the mid-table, surged into that conversation with a dominant sweep over Ball State.
Series Standouts
Kent State made a loud statement with a sweep over their rivals, Akron, beating the Zips convincingly in each of the three games. Senior catcher Brody Williams paced the offense all weekend, recording four extra-base hits and reaching base eight times. Williams would earn MAC Player of the Week for his weekend.
He wasn’t alone. Junior outfielders Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe and Alejandro Covas each came through with multiple-RBI hits in the seventh inning to complete a comeback and hand the first game, an 8-4 win, to the Golden Flashes.
The pitching staff was just as impactful. After redshirt sophomore pitcher Easton Tumis struggled out of the gate, Kent State went to the towering righty, redshirt sophomore pitcher Evan Holewinski. He dealt, giving them 5.1 innings of shutout relief while fanning six.
Senior pitcher Ciaran Caughey and redshirt sophomore pitcher Ben Rabatin provided strong starts in Sunday’s doubleheader to finish off the sweep with 12-1 and 7-2 wins to clinch a postseason spot.
Northern Illinois kept its foot on the gas with a sweep of Central Michigan, continuing one of the most consistent stretches in the conference this season. The Huskies have won ten of their last twelve games and made quick work of the Chippewas over the weekend.
The Huskies’ lineup continues to roll from top to bottom. Sophomore infielder Nolan Sandee and graduate student outfielder Gavin Baldwin led the way early in the weekend, hitting home runs in the opening 12-1 win. On the mound, senior pitcher Max Vaisvila stayed unbeaten with another efficient outing, throwing seven innings of one-run baseball.
On Saturday, junior infielder Vinny Spotofora took over, recording a three-hit, five-RBI performance, building a lead from the first inning. Baldwin put the exclamation point on the game, blasting a second homer in the ninth, securing a 10-5 win.
Sophomore pitcher Carter Cox delivered a workhorse performance in the finale, shoving eight innings, allowing two runs, and striking out four to secure the sweep and a long-awaited tournament berth for Northern Illinois, their first since 2019. Freshman outfielder Wyatt Wawro continued his torrid stretch throughout the series, extending his hitting streak to fourteen games, and his multi-hit streak to nine. He’s pushed his season-long batting average to .391, good for third in the conference among players with a hundred or more at bats.
Miami’s series win over Western Michigan looked very different, but ended with the same result; another postseason clincher. The RedHawk pitching staff couldn’t keep the Broncos off the basepaths, but were able to put 33 runs across to secure a postseason clinching series win.
Freshman infielder Diego Cruz and sophomore catcher Carson Raether consistently put bat to barrel, combining for thirteen hits across the series. Junior outfielder Marcus Dierks created havoc on the bases, stealing three bases in the series opener, a 11-9 win.
Junior outfielder Ryan Novak was the dynamo for Miami’s offense, hitting three home runs and plating seven runs, becoming the third RedHawk to reach double-digit homers for the season. His third bomb, a lead-taking sixth-inning grand slam, handed Miami the clinch with a 12-8 win.

Western Michigan needed to get something out of the weekend to keep themselves in a position to control their postseason destiny, but stared down a five-run deficit in the eighth inning.
With two men on base, senior catcher Diego Pena launched a three-run homer to cut Miami’s lead to just two. Senior pitcher DJ Thompson tossed an efficient and scoreless ninth, giving the Broncos a shot to win it in the ninth.
Two walks and a single set up a bases-loaded opportunity for junior outfielder Cooper Hums, who drew a walk to cut the deficit to one. A fielder’s choice tied the game, giving graduate student infielder Michael Maloney a shot with two outs and runners on the corners.
Maloney poked a single into center, scoring the runner and giving the Broncos a much-needed win.

Toledo had the most emphatic weekend of any team in the conference, sweeping Ball State and securing their place in the postseason. They’ve won seven of their last eight, and are getting hot at the right time.
The Rockets provided run support for senior pitcher Nathan Leininger, who tied a season-high by throwing 118 pitches in his seven-inning, three-run outing. Seven different Toledo hitters crossed the plate to build a five-run lead, a lead that redshirt freshman Nate Langbehn protected over the final two innings to close a 8-3 win.
After winning a hotly-contested rubber match, Toledo’s offense exploded in the finale, hanging 20 runs on the Cardinals. Junior designated hitter Cole Cahill and freshman outfielder Liam Arsich led the charge in a game where every Rocket hitter recorded a hit.
While the offense surged, redshirt freshman pitcher Michael Fliss shut down Ball State’s attack, sitting down nine in his six-inning stretch, before Langbehn closed the shortened game out in the seventh. With five straight wins and a tournament berth secured, Toledo looks like a legitimate threat heading into the final stretch.
Eastern Michigan quietly put together a solid weekend, taking two of three from Bowling Green behind dominant pitching.
Junior pitcher John Carmichael’s 8.2-inning outing on Friday set the tone, and earned him the MAC’s second Player of the Week honor, while the Eagles held the Falcons to three or fewer runs in all three games.
The Eagles got offense from senior utilityman Ty Stecko provided the offensive spark, homering in the finale and driving in multiple runs across the series, while the Eastern Michigan pitching staff delivered one of their most complete weekends of the season, holding Bowling Green to just six runs in three games.
UMass continued their late push with another series win, taking two of three from Ohio to make it four straight. After dropping the opener due to late-inning heroics from the Wildcats, the Minutemen hit their way to a win behind redshirt senior infielder Sam Hill’s grand slam, then ground out a 1-0 victory in the finale behind a dominant pitching performance from freshman pitcher Sam Perry, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh while striking out seven.

A look ahead
With the calendar flipped to May, three teams are fighting for two spots in the tournament.
Western Michigan holds the fifth seed with a two-game cushion over sixth-place Ball State and will have an opportunity to clinch against a reeling Bowling Green squad.
To stay in the mix, UMass will need to find a way to keep winning when they travel to Oxford to take on Miami. They’re two games behind Ball State, who’ll have to travel to Northern Illinois.
With just a few weekends remaining, just two spots in the postseason remain, but the regular season champion is far from decided.
