Todd Simon, Bowling Green agree to contract extension
Simon's stewardship has been rewarded after a promising 2025-26 campaign.
Bowling Green announced a contract extension with men's basketball head coach Todd Simon on Thursday morning, upping his current deal until the end of the 2029-30 season.
"Todd has done an outstanding job leading our men's basketball program," Bowling Green athletic director Derek van der Merwe said via press release. "His dedication to building a strong culture, mentoring student-athletes, and competing at a high level makes him the right leader for our program moving forward."
Simon has made quite the impact on the Falcons, accumulating a 52-46 record (including 27-27 in conference play)– making him BGSU's winningest head coach in his first three seasons at the helm– and developing 2025-26's MAC Defensive Player of the Year in Javontae Campbell.
"I am grateful to Derek van der Merwe and President Rodney Rogers for their faith in the direction of the program," Simon said via press release. "With their support and alignment, we have navigated a transformative time in men's basketball with success and have built a sustainable infrastructure to continue to build upon. My wife and kids are also very thankful to be ingrained in the Bowling Green community. We will work tirelessly every day to elevate the program to a MAC championship and chase the first NCAA Tournament bid since 1968."
Simon was tasked with a cultural rebuild BG upon his arrival after eight seasons under Michael Huger, guiding the team from 20 losses in 2022-23 to 20 wins in 2023-24 to earn the program's 10th season of 20+ wins since joining the MAC. Under Simon, BG has posted seven players to all-MAC teams and made the MAC Basketball Tournament's quarterfinal round over three-straight seasons for the first time since 2003-2005.
The 2025-26 season was particularly historic for Bowling Green, highlighted by notching an upset win over Kansas State to defeat a Power conference opponent for the first time since 2005. BG also broke records for fastest 10-win start (1947-48) and most steals in a game (27) for both the program and the MAC in the campaign, while also scoring over 100 points four times (second in program history) and holding VMI to 20 percent shooting and 10 made field goals– both believed to be BGSU all-time records for a single game.
The team's academic numbers have also impressed, with a team GPA of 3.46 and back-t0-back perfect Academic Progress Rate marks.
The news of Simon's extension comes the day after Travis Steele's re-signing with Miami was confirmed.
